Our Behavioral Health Services Department is available to assist members in accessing care and identifying providers who specialize in treating their particular needs.


If you're pregnant, might become pregnant or just had a baby, CHG is pleased to introduce the Maternal Mental Health Program. You can learn more about this program by visiting the Maternal Mental Health page.

Medi-Cal Members:

  • Community Health Group covers members for initial mental health evaluation without needing pre-approval (prior authorization) with an in-network mental health provider.  
  • Specialty Mental Health, meaning treatment for a serious mental health condition, is a covered benefit by the San Diego County Mental Health Plan. Services include counseling, psychiatric medication management, crisis intervention and inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.   • Substance Use Disorder Services is a Medi-Cal benefit covered by the County of San Diego Drug Organized Medi-Cal Delivery System. Services include residential care and rehabilitation. To access Substance Use Disorder Services call the San Diego County Access & Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240.
  • Community Health Group covers Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Alcohol and Drug Screening, Assessment, Brief Interventions and Referral to Treatment (SABIRT) for members. Ask your primary care doctor about these services or call Community Health Group's Behavioral Health Services at 1-800-404-3332.
  • Community Health Group Medi-Cal members with a mild to moderate mental health condition can receive outpatient care by calling Community Health Group's Behavioral Health Services Department at 1-800-404-3332.
  • Behavioral Health Services include the following:
    • Individual and group mental health testing and treatment (psychotherapy)
    • Psychological testing to evaluate a mental health condition
    • Outpatient services that include lab work, drugs, and supplies
    • Outpatient services to monitor drug therapy
    • Psychiatric consultation 

CommuniCare Advantage (HMO D-SNP) Members

Community Health Group Medicare members in need of behavioral health services may access care by calling our Behavioral Health Department at 1-800-404-3332. Behavioral health services include the following:

  • Individual and group mental health treatment (psychotherapy)
  • Psychological testing to evaluate a mental health condition
  • Outpatient services that include lab work, drugs, and supplies
  • Outpatient services to monitor drug therapy
  • Psychiatric consultation
  • Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment
  • Day Treatment
  • Partial Hospitalization Program
  • Intensive Outpatient Program
  • Substance Misuse Treatment
  • Acute Medical Detox

Behavioral Health Treatments are also covered by Community Health Group. Behavioral Health Treatments (BHT) includes services such as Applied Behavioral Analysis. Services must be medically necessary, prescribed by a licensed physician or psychologist and approved by Community Health Group. To find a Community Health Group provider who specializes in BHT, call our Behavioral Health Services Department at 1-800-404-3332.

Community Health Group follows all State and Federal Mental Health Parity laws and regulations. 

Community Health Group covers outpatient mental health treatment for our Medi-Cal members with a mild to moderate condition.  There are no limits on the number of outpatient visits and there are no co-pays for covered services.

Mental health services for our Medi-Cal members with a serious mental health condition are covered by the County Mental Health Plan. 

For our CommuniCare Advantage members, Community Health Group covers inpatient and outpatient treatment. There are no limits on the number of inpatient days in a facility and no limits on the number of outpatient visits. Additionally, Community Health Group Medicare members do not have any co-pays for mental health services.
